Sunday October 19, 2003No. 3 Florida Volleyball Shuts Out Mississippi 3-0

Aury Cruz tallied 17.5 points on 13 kills, two service aces, nine digs and four blocks, and Jane Collymore added 10 kills as the third-ranked Florida volleyball team defeated Mississippi 3-0 (30-15, 30-12, 30-13) Sunday in Oxford, Miss. The sweep is the Gators' 19th consecutive shutout this season, and Sunday's win marks the 13th straight season that Florida has recorded 20 wins in a season (all under Mary Wise).

Sherri Williams hit .600 on seven kills and one error in 10 attacks, and Benavia Jenkins added nine kills and five blocks in the win.

Florida (20-1, 8-0 SEC) got on the board first in the match with a kill by Jenkins and a Lady Rebel attack error. A kill by Cruz several plays later gave Florida the 4-1 advantage. The Gators opened a six-point lead at 9-3 after a short run that included a Cruz service ace and a kill by Michelle Chatman. Mississippi (4-18, 2-6 SEC) could not string together more than two points at a time, and the Gators took an 11-point lead at 22-11 on a kill by Sherri Williams, forcing the Lady Rebels to use a timeout. The Gators used an 8-4 run that included kills from Williams, Collymore and Jenkins to close out the first game 30-15.

The Gators scored first in the second game as well and quickly took a 9-2 lead on kills from Cruz and Collymore. Mississippi worked its way back to a five-point deficit at 10-5. Florida the moved out to a 14-6 lead after kills from Williams and Amber McCray. Florida went on runs of three points several times, punctuated by kills from Jenkins, Lauren Moscovic and Cruz to take a 23-11 lead and force the Lady Rebels to call a timeout. The Gators continued their run behind the service of Moscovic, including a block by Stefanie Douglas and McCray and two service aces by Moscovic. In all, Moscovic served nine points for Florida to help the Gators to a 30-12 win in game two.

The Gators began game three with three straight points on kills from Collymore and Jenkins and a block by Jenkins and Moscovic. After Mississippi scored on the next play, Florida opened up a six-point run that included kills from Cruz and Moscovic and a service ace by Jenkins to take a 9-2 lead. The Lady Rebels followed with two straight points, but the Gators kept adding to their lead, extending it to 12-4 before Mississippi called a timeout. The Lady Rebels scored coming out of the stoppage, but Florida added four consecutive points to take the 16-5 lead. After taking a 22-9 lead, the Gators never allowed Mississippi to get closer than 10 points, winning the third game 30-13.

For Mississippi, Jaclyn Toohey tallied five kills, followed by Rachel Refenes with four. Elena Garcia and Karla Zshau each added five digs in the effort.

Florida returns home for a three-match home stand beginning Friday against Kentucky at 7 p.m. EST.
