Gainesville, FL

Christine Johnson (#10) celebrates her game-winning goal with Cherry Pickman and Stephanie Freeman.

Christine Johnson’s golden goal at 91:44 gave the No. 7 University of Florida soccer team a 1-0 victory over No. 25 Auburn Sunday afternoon at Percy Beard Stadium. The win improves Florida’s overall record to 10-1 and 2-0 in the Southeastern Conference, while Auburn dropped to 7-2-2 and 0-1-1 in league play. Florida’s 10 wins already equals the wins total of last year’s Gator squad.

The crowd of 1,533 sat silent most of the game as the Gators and Auburn played to a stalemate for the length of regulation.

But when Robin Fulton found a streaking Johnson in the middle of the Tiger defense, the somewhat stunned crowd rose to their feet as "CJ" put the game winner past two-time All-American Tiger goaltender Megan Rivera.

Florida outshot the Tigers 13-6 and had several chances in each half but it could not put the ball in the net.

"It was just a frustrating game", Florida Head Coach Becky Burleigh said. "It could have been 3-0 at halftime but we couldn’t finish. That’s what happened you let a game go. You start to doubt your ability to finish and all it takes is one mistake by you and it could cost you the game."

For Johnson, it was her second golden goal of the season, the other in an overtime thriller against BYU in Provo, Utah on Sept. 26. She also turned in the winner in the 2-1 overtime win last season vs. Tennessee on Oct.18, 2002. Johnson said it was one of the more challenging matches of the season thus far.

"It was pretty intense," Johnson said. "The coaches got on us before overtime and said we needed to take more pride in what we were doing. Auburn beat us last year and we had to take more pride. It started with the kickoff. Stephanie Freeman got it going for us."

Freeman, the junior tri-captain, was responsible for many of the scoring chances throughout the match. Freeman recognized the need for the Gators to finish on good scoring opportunities.

"I think we played well," Freeman said. "I’m sure finishing drills will be coming in practice this week though."

It was the second overtime match of the season for the Gators. It was the second consecutive overtime match for Auburn, as it tied South Carolina 0-0 on Oct. 3. It was the fourth overtime contest of the season for the Tigers, who are now 1-1-2 in 2003 overtime matches.

Florida hits the road for the second time this season when they take on Tennessee on Friday, Oct. 10 in Knoxville at 7:00 p.m. The last three meetings between the Lady Vols and the Gators have gone to overtime. UT took the last meeting 2-1 in double overtime to defeat Florida in the 2002 SEC Tournament final match. The game will be telecast live on Sunshine starting at 7:00 p.m. It will also be webcast on www.gatorzone.com.
