Junior Ashley Kellgren turned in two goals in Florida's 5-0 win Friday vs. Alabama.

Two Ashley Kellgren goals highlighted a 5-0 shutout by the No. 7 University of Florida soccer team over Alabama Friday night in front of a Percy Beard Stadium crowd of 3,015. Florida dominated the Southeastern Conference opener out shooting the Crimson Tide 26-7. The Gators improve to 9-1 while Alabama falls to 7-4.

Stephanie Freeman started the scoring for Florida at 25:38 when she flicked the ball with her head to the near post after a bending free kick from the deep near corner by Melanie Booth. For the five-foot midfielder her fourth goal of the season might have been a bit lucky.

"I was getting ready to duck," Freeman said. "The taller players were behind me but I thought I might have a play so I went for it."

Megan McMillan added her fourth goal of the season just before the half at 40:56. Crystal Frimpong brought the ball to the near side and found McMillan in front of the Crimson Tide net on a cross. Frimpong demonstrated what has been giving Gator opponent’s fits all season, superior team speed. Florida Head Coach Becky Burleigh agreed.

"Our speed and our combinations makes it seem we have a numerical advantage sometimes," Burleigh said. "They were taking a lot of chances to try and score and we caught them in it a few times."

Dena Floyd started scoring in the second half converting on her third penalty kick of the season at 53:33. The PK was set up when a free kick off the foot of Freeman found the hand of an Alabama defender inside the Crimson Tide box.

With the match out of reach, Kellgren took over. Her first goal coming at 70:56 courtesy of a Frimpong cross that found Kellgren eight yards in front of the Alabama net. Megan McMillan also assisted on the goal, as she would on Kellgren’s second almost five minutes later at 75:14.

Kellgren found McMillan just outside the box and in a quasi give and go hit Kellgren in stride from 10 yards out where the forward converted for her second goal of the night and fifth on the season which ties her with Frimpong for the team lead in goals.

Freshman Brittni Goodwin recorded her third shutout of the season registering five saves on the night. Florida’s five goals give them 31 on the season, which is already two more than the entire team output a year ago.

The Gators take on Auburn on Sunday at home. Last year’s SEC regular season champion played to a double overtime stalemate against South Carolina in Columbia on Friday. Match time is set for 2:30. Sunday is your last chance to snag a Gatorade trading card featuring Florida senior soccer players. The match will also be broadcast on www.Gatorzone.com beginning at 2:30.
