Led by senior Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) and sophomore James Vargas (Miami, Fla.), the No. 3 Florida menís golf ended its first day of competition in the Fall 2003 season by standing in first place at six under at the Bank of the Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Ridges Golf and Country Club on Saturday.
The Gators carded rounds of 290 and 280 for a total of 570 (-6) and lead TCU by six strokes entering the final day of competition on Sunday. TCU, Wake Forrest, Tennessee, Georgia, Oklahoma and Kansas didnít complete the second round due to darkness and will finish on Sunday.
Villegas paced Florida with rounds of 69 and 70 (-5) and was the leader among players who finished both rounds after tallying 10 birdies on the day. Vargas was right behind with a pair of 70s (-4) after picking up a hole-in-one on the par 3 third hole in his second round. He also registered a pair of eagles on the day.
Freshman Jessie Mudd (Louisville, Ky.) made his collegiate debut and finished tied for 22nd. After opening with a 75 in the first round, he rebounded with a two-under 70 in the second round at the par 72, 7,147-yard course.
Sophomore Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) ended the day at +2 after registering rounds of 76 and 70 and was tied for 27th.
Sophomore Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) shot a 79 and a 74 (+9) in his first two rounds to stand in a tie for 67th.
