Cherry Pickman (above) and Crystal Frimpong scored goals in UF's 2-1 win vs. No. 7 Penn State.
Sophomore Cherry Pickman slid her way to the first goal of the No. 21 Florida soccer teamís season on Friday as the Gators outlasted visiting No. 7 Penn State on a wet Percy Beard Stadium Field. The start of the match was delayed an hour and a half due to inclement weather.
No. 21 Florida never trailed in the match and took a 2-0 lead when Crystal Frimpong pounded a goal in off a keeper deflection about 15 minutes into the second half. Joanna Lohman tallied the lone Penn State goal four minutes later. The Gators move to 1-0 on the young season while the Nittany Lions drop to 0-1.
"That was big win for our team," Coach Becky Burleigh said. "I think this team needed that for our confidence."
For Pickman, perseverance paid off after the two teams battled through a scoreless tie for much of the first half.
"Thatís something we work on time and time again in practice," Pickman said. "I am just suppose to be in the right place (back post) and I was."
The Gators are back in action on Sunday against No. 19 Southern California, which opened the season with a 2-1 win at No. 15 Florida State on Friday. The match is set for 1:00 at Percy Beard Stadium. Florida fans can pick up the first card of a set of four Gatorade Trading Cards featuring members of the Gator senior class at Sundayís match.
