Sunday August 17, 2003VB Orange and Blue Scrimmage Ends in 1-1 Tie
Gator fans got their first look at the 2003 edition of the Florida volleyball team Sunday at UF’s annual Orange and Blue Scrimmage. The scrimmage ended in a 1-1 tie for the second straight season, as the orange team took Game 1 30-25, while the blue team won the second game 30- 25.
Orange team member Aury Cruz (Levittown, Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) led both teams with 10 kills and 11 digs. Cruz, who spent the past two weeks in the Dominican Republic playing for Puerto Rico in the Pan American Games, arrived at 12:45 p.m. in just enough time to change and join her teammates for the autograph session preceding the match. Freshman Amber McCray (Longview, Texas) added seven kills in her debut, while setter Lauren Moscovic (Stockton, Calif.) tallied 19 assists and a service ace for the orange team.
For the blue team, Michelle Chatman (Woodridge, Ill.) registered seven kills and seven digs to lead the team, while Jacque Robinson (Merced, Calif.) added six kills, five digs and two blocks.
Prior to the match, fans were able to meet the team and coaches and get autographs at the annual Fan Day.
Florida enters the season ranked No. 3 in the USA Today/AVCA preseason poll and will kick off the season Friday with the State Farm Classic presented by NACWAA in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Gators open with defending national champion USC at 11 p.m. EST and will face either Hawaii or Kansas State on Saturday.
