Monday September 6, 1999UF Soccer Team Defeats No. 24 Southern Cal 3-1

Los Angeles, Calif.

The No. 4 University of Florida soccer team defeated No. 24 Southern California 3-1 Monday afternoon in the 1999 USC Fila Challenge at McAlister Field. The win ups the Gators' 1999 record to 4-0, while USC drops to 2-1.

The match was scoreless until the 39th minute, when senior captain Sarah Yohe hit an 18-foot left shot to the far post to put the Gators on the board. It was the longest period of time the Gators had been held scoreless from the start of the match this season.

USC's Katie Ticehurst hit a running 20-yard shot over UF goal keeper Regan Wiesemann's outstretched hand in the 58th minute to knot the score at 1-1. The match remained tied until the 81st minute, when UF freshman Danielle Murphy scored her first goal of the season with a 15-yard shot set up when USC goal keeper Shaelyn Fernandes knocked a Gator free kick out of the goal area. Yohe scored her second goal of the match in the 90th minute after she beat the keeper after a long run on the left side of the field, sending the ball in untouched.

"We are definitely happy to get to wins on the road against two quality, ranked teams," UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh said. "We definitely have some things to work on this week in practice. Today, a lot of people had to step up and they did what we asked - we certainly were pleased with that. I thought Heather (Mitts) did a good job anchoring the back and Sarah had a good work rate again up top for us. Keisha (Bell) was also solid. I was also pleased with the play of our subs today."

The Gators return home to play host to their first Southeastern Conference matches of the season. UF meets Kentucky on Friday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. and No. 19 Vanderbilt on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 2:30 p.m.
