Women's T&F Coach, Thrower Honored by USTCA

University of Florida women’s track and field coach Tom Jones and thrower Candice Scott have been recognized as South District Mondo Coach and Athlete of the Year, the United States Track Coaches Association announced Wednesday.

This is the third USTCA South region Coach of the Year award for Jones, who led the Gators to their fourth Southeastern Conference outdoor title on May 18. Jones was also recognized last season as the USTCA Indoor Coach of the Year, as well as the NCAA Division I Indoor Women’s Coach of the Year.

Scott was named the Mondo Women’s Track Athlete of the Week twice during the outdoor season, as well as SEC Athlete of the Week. Scott set the collegiate record in the hammer throw at the Florida Relays with a mark of 223-0 and re-set that record at Penn Relays with a throw of 223- 10.

Four regional coaches of the year and athletes of the year will be selected after this weekend’s NCAA Regional competition. All Mondo District and Region Coach-of-the-Year and Athlete-of-the-Year awards will be presented at the Mondo Coaches Banquet in Sacramento, Calif., on June 9 prior to the beginning of the NCAA Championships.
