The University of Florida softball team scored the final three runs of the game to overcome a 2-0 deficit to defeat Oregon State, 3-2 Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Region Four Championship at the Florida Softball Field. The Gators ran their record to 41-23 overall, while Oregon State fell to 32-30.
With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Jackie Marchetta scored the game-winning run on a throwing error by Beaver pitcher Amy Klever. Marchetta reached base earlier in the inning on a single to centerfield. She followed by stealing second and reached third on the sac bunt by Mylin Prieto before going home on the error. Marchetta went 2-for-3 at the plate and was the only Florida player to collect two hits in the contest.
The Beavers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the third inning with a solo homerun to straight away centerfield by Lisa Allen. Oregon State scored its second run an inning later on a Steph Adams double, which scored Vanessa Iapala.
The Gators started their comeback in bottom half of the fourth with a leadoff single by Jenny Gladding. Brittani Houghtan pinch ran for Gladding and scored on an error by Oregon State leftfielder Adrienne Alo.
UF picked up the tying run in its half of the sixth with a Lindsey Cameron RBI double to leftfield scoring Jennifer Mossadeghi who walked earlier in the inning.
The Gators’ slow start at the plate was a non-factor as Gladding went the distance allowing only seven hits and striking out five. Oregon State had several other chances to score early in the game but stranded seven runners in the first few innings.
Florida advanced to the second round to play the winner of the Florida State-Texas-Arlington game Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
