Sunday May 11, 2003Softball Forced to Second Semifinal with 1-0 Loss

The Florida Softball team (40-22) was forced into a second semifinal game with a 1-0 loss to LSU in Saturday’s late game of the Southeastern Conference Tournament. The two teams will face off again tomorrow at 10 a.m. The winner will advance to the championship game against Alabama at 1:30 p.m.

LSU loaded the bases on a hit and two walks in the top of the fifth inning. Pinch hitter Lauren Delahoussaye had the first RBI single of the game to score Julie Wiese from third for a 1-0 Tiger lead and the eventual win.

Florida was only able to get one hit in the game. Jackie Marchetta had the only hit in the bottom of the first. The Gators had two additional base runners on a walk and a wild pitch on a strikeout.

In the top of the first inning, starter Jenny Gladding struck out Alicia Owen for her 271st strikeout of the season, breaking Chelsey Sakizzie’s record for most strikeouts in a single season. Sakizzie struck out 270 batters in 287.0 innings in 1998. Gladding’s 271 strikeouts came in 233.2 innings.

Gladding pitched four no-hit innings before being relieved by Amanda Moore (13-6) to start the fifth.

The 10 a.m. game will be broadcast live on FoxSportsNet will carry the SEC Championship game as part of the SEC TV package at 1:30 p.m. ET.
