Saturday May 10, 2003Middle Innings Doom Baseball in 8-3 Loss

Gainesville, FL

Jonathan Tucker had three hits and drove in a run for the Gators.

Ole Miss scored eight runs in the middle three innings and the University of Florida baseball team (32-17-1, 11-14-1 SEC) couldn’t produce enough offense as they fell 8-3 to the Rebels Saturday evening. The Gators recorded nine hits and drew two walks but scored just single runs in three straight innings.

Florida left two runners on base in three separate innings and left 10 stranded in the game. Jonathan Tucker was 3-for-5 for Florida while both Brian Rose and Justin Tordi had a pair of hits.

Florida starter Justin Hoyman pitched three scoreless innings allowing just a pair of singles before Ole Miss broke through in the fourth. Stephen Head reached on an error and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Prior to Head reaching base Hoyman had retired eight straight Rebel hitters. Following the second out of the inning Charlie Waite picked up an RBI with a single through the right side of the infield.

The Gators responded in the top of the next inning as Tucker tied the score with an RBI single. Brett Dowdy reached on an error and advanced to second on the play. Tucker didn’t waste anytime as he drove the first pitch in his at bat into left field to knot the game at 1-1.

Ole Miss then took command in the fifth as they used a walk and four hits to score four runs. After a walk to Bryce Morrison, Matt Tolbert singled. Leadoff hitter Jonathan Swearingen then drove a run home with a single to break the tie. Seth Smith then grounded into a fielder’s choice but the throw to turn two went array and the Rebels scored a second run in the inning. A double by Head then scored Smith and Head later came home for the Ole Miss fifth run on a single by Chad Sterbens.

Florida cut the Ole Miss lead to 5-2 with a single run in the sixth. Stephen Barton and Tordi led off the sixth with back-to-back singles. A sacrifice bunt moved both base runners ahead a base before pinch hitter Matt Maley picked up an RBI on a groundout.

Hoyman came out to start the sixth but was removed after giving a pair of singles to start the inning. The sophomore gave up nine hits and seven runs (six earned) with a walk and three strikeouts. His record dropped to 7-5 with the loss.

Three runs by Ole Miss in the sixth added to their lead. A two RBI single by Charlie Babineaux who was pinch-hitting scored Brian Pettway and Matt Mossberg. Babineaux then came home with two outs on a single to center by Smith.

Brae Wright earned the win on the mound for Ole Miss as he went 5.1 innings and gave up seven hits and two runs (one earned) in improving to 4-2 on the season.

The finale of the series will take place at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday. The game will be broadcast on Rock 104 and the softball game will be broadcast on WRUF 850 AM.
