Plant City, FL

Jenny Gladding hit the game winning home run and earned her 22nd win of the season.

The Florida softball team advanced to the semifinals of the Southeastern Conference Softball Tournament with a 1-0 win over top seeded Georgia. It is the third time in school history the Gators have advanced to the semifinals of the tournament. Georgia has never won a second round game.

Junior pitcher Jenny Gladding slammed a lead off homer deep over the fence in right center field in the bottom of the second inning to give Florida a 1-0 lift. The homer was the 12th of the season for Gladding.

With the hit, Gladding extended her hitting streak to 13 games, which is a Florida record. The previous record was 12 games from March 10 to March 22, 2000.

The Gators did not get their second hit of the game until Mirelis Torres hit a line drive right inside the right field line for a double in the bottom of the sixth. Gladding was intentionally walked. Both runners moved into scoring position on a Lacey Gardner wild pitch in the dirt, but the Gators were not able to take advantage of the position as Jennifer Mossadeghi struck out looking for the third out.

The Gators ended a 19-game hitting streak by Georgia’s Kim Wendland. The last game she did not get a hit in was the final game of the series between the two teams on April 6.

Gladding gave up only two hits in the 1-0 win. She is now 22-12 on the season. She now has the most wins in a season of any Florida pitcher since Chelsey Sakizzie earned 30 wins in 1998. Georgia’s Gardner received the loss. Her record is now 11-3 on the season.

Florida advances to play the winner of the LSU vs. South Carolina game tomorrow at 8 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WRUF AM 850 and www.Gatorzone.com.
