Friday May 9, 2003Baseball Leaves Nine On Base in 2-0 Loss

Gainesville, FL

Tommy Boss threw a career high six innings in his fourth career start.

The University of Florida baseball team (32-16-1, 11-13-1 SEC) could not come up a clutch hit with men on base and was shutout 2-0 by Ole Miss (30-21, 14-11 SEC) in the first game of a series with the Rebels Friday night. The Gators left nine runners on base including five in scoring position.

Ole Miss scored a first inning run after Seth Smith doubled to the left center field gap. Following the second out of the inning, Chad Sterbens singled home Smith with a shot to left field. The 1-0 Rebel lead would hold as a pair of Ole Miss pitchers combined to give up just three hits.

Florida threatened in the third against Ole Miss starter T.J. Beam but could not come up with a clutch hit. The Gators loaded the bases with one out after a pair of walks and a base hit from Stephen Barton. Beam then struck out two straight hitters to end the threat.

Beam would pitch seven innings before giving way to Stephen Head who came on in the eighth. Beam would give just a pair of hits while walking four and striking out eight in improving to 7-1 on the season. Head would earn his 11th save by pitching the final two innings.

The Gators would put two runners aboard in the eighth against Head but again left them stranded. Pinch hitter Matt Graziano worked the count to 2-2 before taking a called third strike on the outside part of the plate to end the inning.

After giving up the first inning run Florida starter Tommy Boss would cruise as he retired 12 of the next 13 batters he faced. Boss was removed after a career high six innings of work in taking the loss which dropped his record to 2-3. The sophomore threw just 71 pitches over his six innings and gave up six hits and one run with no walks and two strikeouts.

The Rebels would add an insurance run in the eighth after six straight scoreless innings by both teams. Brian Pettway knocked home Sterbens who earlier had doubled.

Pettway and Sterbens both had two hits including doubles for the Rebels.

The two teams will meet in the middle game of the series on Saturday with game time set for 5 p.m. ET.
