Saturday April 26, 2003Men's Golf In Fifth At Day 2 Of SEC Championship

The University of Florida men's golf team is tied for fifth place at +25 (585) following the first two rounds of the 2003 SEC Championship at the Sea Island Golf Course in Sea Island, Ga. The Gators are eight strokes behind the leaders Tennessee and Georgia, who are both at +17 (577).

UF was led by freshman Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) for the second day, as he is in second place at -1 (139) following the first 36 holes of the tournament. Stegmaier and Georgia's Kevin Kisner are the only two golfers in the field to shoot under par following the first two rounds of the tournament. Stegmaier shot a two-over par 72 on Saturday.

Following Stegmaier is senior Jordan Code (Tampa, Fla.), who is tied for 17th at +7 (147). Code, who shot a +3 the first day, followed by shooting a four-over 74 in the second day of the tournament.

Two other Gators are among the top-30 golfers in the field after Saturday's round. Junior Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) and freshman Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) are tied for 25th and 29th respectively. Villegas shot a three-over 73 in the second 18 holes to finish at +9 (149) heading into the final round. Every shot 74 (+4) on Saturday to head into Sunday's round at +10 (150).

Freshman James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) rounds out the Gator's five golfers, as he shot a second round +5 (75) to finish tied for 33rd at +11 (151) for the tournament so far.

The third and final round of the conference championship will begin at 8 a.m. Sunday at the Sea Island Golf course.
