Friday April 25, 2003MGolf in Fourth after Day One of SEC Championship

Sea Island, GA

Anchored by a three-under-par 67 from freshman Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.), the University of Florida menís golf team is in fourth place after the first round of the Southeastern Conference Championship in Sea Island, Ga. The Gators shot a 12-over-par 292 and are just four shots off the lead held by Georgia.

After a three-and-a-half hour rain delay halted play around 2 p.m. with nine teams still on the course, the golfers resumed the round and finished at dusk. Stegmaier is tied with Georgiaís Kevin Kisner for the individual lead.

Stegmaier led Florida with an opening-round 67, just one stroke of his season-best, and Fridayís score was the best start to a tournament for the freshman this season. Stegmaier was one of just four players to finish the day under par. Jordan Code (Tampa, Fla.) shot a three- over-par 73 to finish the opening round tied for 17th.

Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia), Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) and James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) all finished the first day of the SEC Championship with a six-over-par 76 to tie for 29th.

Georgia leads the tournament at 288 (+8), followed by Tennessee at 289 (+9) and 2002 SEC Champion Auburn at 291 (+11).
