Sunday April 20, 2003Men's Golf Finishes Third At Auburn Multi Match

The No. 9 University of Florida men's golf team finished tied for third with an even-par 288 Sunday at the Auburn Multi-Match in Auburn, Ala. The tournament, held at the Auburn University Club, was designed for teams in the Southeastern part of the country to get a preview of the course, which will be the new home to one of the NCAA Regionals May 15-17. The regional was originally scheduled for the Yale Golf Course in New Haven, Conn., but had to be moved due to ongoing renovations to the course.

The Gators finished tied for third with Auburn's B team. Auburn's starting five team won the tournament with a five-under 283, while Georgia finished second with a 287 (-1).

Freshman James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) finished in fifth place with a two-under 70. Junior Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) was right behind Vargas in a tie for sixth with a 71 (-1).

Freshmen Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) and Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) finished in a four way tie for 14th with a pair of 73s (+1). Seniors Jodan Code (Tampa, Fla.) and Ari Savolainen (Helsinki, Finland) finished 17th and 28th respectively. Code shot a +2 (74), while Savolainen shot a +5 (77).

The Gators will be back in action from April 25-27 at the 2003 Southeastern Conference Championship at the Sea Side Golf Course in Seaside, Ga.
