Saturday April 5, 2003Softball Drops Second Game of Georgia Doubleheader
The No. 24 Florida softball team (30-11, 11-3 SEC) dropped the second game of Saturdayís doubleheader to the No. 8 Georgia Bulldogs (39-6, 14-3 SEC) in Athens. After winning the first game 4-2, the Gators lost the second 10-1 in six innings.
Florida had a big first inning in game one, but it was Georgiaís turn for a big first in game two. Nicole Barber led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice. The next two batters walked to load the bases with only one out. Junior Amanda Moore came in the game to replace Florida starter Mandy Schuerman. A base hit by Shannon McKeon scored two runs. McKeon advanced to second on an error on the play. Michelle Green scored on a RBI single by Courtney Knight. Georgia took a 4-0 lead on a Ashley Godfrey ground out to first.
Florida scored its only run of the game in the top of the fourth. Jackie Marchetta led off the inning with an infield base hit to break up Michelle Greenís no hitter. She was thrown out attempting to steal for the first out. Nikki Baldwin followed with a short base hit in centerfield. The Gators third consecutive hit, a Mylin Prieto double scored Baldwin from first.
Georgia added three more runs on a hit, a Gator error and three walks in the fourth inning for a 7-1 lead. The Bulldogs took a 8-1 lead with a leadoff home run by Godfrey in the bottom of the fifth. Green hit a walkoff homer with a runner on to end the game with Georgia winning 10-1 in the bottom of the sixth.
The two teams will play the rubber match tomorrow at 1 p.m.
