Sunday August 29, 1999Gator Soccer Defeats UCF 5-0; Soph. scores 3 Goals
The University of Florida soccer team moved to 2-0 on the year after defeating Central Florida 5-0 Sunday afternoon in front of a Percy Beard crowd of 1,424.
Sophomore All-American Andi Sellers, who sat out the 1998 season due to a knee injury, led the Gators Sunday with three goals. The hat-trick was the third of Sellersí career. Sellers got the Gators on the board early, taking the pass from sophomore and fellow Pan Am Games teammate Karyn Hall and hitting an eight-yard shot to the upper left corner at 5:45. She scored again at 14:31, this time an unassisted 18-yard shot from the top corner of the box. The Gators took a 3-0 lead into halftime after an own goal by UCF at 24:40.
Sellers topped off her hat-trick at 60:45, hitting a 15-yarder to the upper right corner. Freshman Danielle Murphy was credited with the assist. Sophomore Abby Wambach, who had several near-misses during the course of the match, finally found the back of the net at 63:53. Freshman Danielle Rust crossed the ball into the box, where Wambach headed in from three feet.
Freshman goal keeper Regan Wiesemann, who recorded two saves Sunday, got the shut-out for the Gators. UF out shot the Golden Knights 41-6 Sunday.
"Iím really pleased with the improvement of the organization in defense," UF Head Becky Burleigh said. "I thought we had better execution overall today."
The Gators will now prepare for a West Coast road trip to Los Angeles, where they will meet No. 16 UCLA on Saturday, Sept. 4 and No.24 Southern California on Monday, Sept. 6.
