Sunday March 23, 2003Softball Defeats Arkansas in Series Final Game
Florida softball (24-10, 7-2 SEC) defeated Arkansas 5-1 (16-18, 4-8 SEC) in the final game of the series at Lady Back Yard to win its third SEC series of the season.
Similar to Saturday’s first game, the Gators took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first innings. Lindsey Cameron reached base on a single and stole second. She scored on a Mylin Prieto triple into the gap in right centerfield.
Arkansas tied the game in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Blaire Woodward drove a base hit deep in the infield and advanced second on the throw, as no one was covering first for the Gator defense. She advanced on ground out to second and scored on an RBI single by Kim Eiben.
Florida went ahead of the Lady Backs again in the top of the third. Leadoff batter Jackie Marchetta reached on an error by the Arkansas shortstop. She scored on a triple up the middle by Kristen Butler. Cameron walked to put runners at first and third with no outs. Mylin Prieto and hit the first pitch out of the park in left centerfield for her fourth home run of the season to give the Gators the 5-1 lead.
Jenny Gladding pitched all but the final inning for the Gators for the win. Her record improves to 10-6 on the season. Valanna Lyons received the loss for Arkansas. Her record is now 7-9.
Florida returns home for the first time in a month to face Ole Miss next weekend. The Gators and the Rebels face off in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday and a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
