The Florida softball team (23-10, 6-2 SEC) split a doubleheader with Arkansas (16-17, 4-7 SEC) today at Lady Back Yard in Fayetteville, Ark. The Gators won the first game 2-1 in eight innings, but lost the second by the same score.
The Gators opened game one taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Mandy Schuerman, the SEC walks leader, got Florida started reaching base on a walk. With two outs, Mylin Prieto drove a base hit through the left side to put runners on first and second. Jennifer Mossadeghi drove Schuerman home with a base hit into centerfield.
Arkansas loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning. Pinch hitter Barbara-Jean Southmayd led off the inning with a walk, Florida pitcher Jenny Gladding’s first to that point. Stephanie Hunter followed with a base hit through the left side. The Gators got the next two runners out and left Lady Back runners on second and third. Gladding intentionally walked Kim Eiben to load the bases and put the force on at every base. Gladding got a 3-2 count on Candice Swan, but gave up the walk to bring in the game-tying run.
The game remained tied through the seventh inning and headed into extra innings. It only took the Gators two batters to take the lead in the top of the eighth. Lindsey Cameron led off the inning with a double to centerfield. She scored on a double to right field by Mylin Prieto.
Reliever Amanda Moore struck out the final two batters to give Florida the 2-1 win. Moore’s record improves to 9-2 on the season. Heather Schlichtman took the loss for Arkansas.
The Lady Backs took the early lead in game two. Hunter led off the bottom of the first with a base hit. Blaire Woodward followed with a shallow base hit to left field and the Gators were able to throw Hunter out at second. Ruth Atkins had the third consecutive Lady Back base hit to put runners on first and second. Lauren Hendrix reached on a fielder’s choice as Woodward was out at third on a ground out to thirdbaseman Jennifer Mossadeghi. Julie Young loaded the bases with a base hit through the left side. Zenovia Davidson, who was pinch running for Atkins, scored on an Ashley Carter base hit down the right field line, but no more runs scored as Kristen Butler threw out Lauren Hendrix at home.
The Gators tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third. Prissie Walden reached first on a walk. Lindsay Norfleet came in the game to pinch run for her. Ashlie Goble followed with a second walk. Both runners advanced on a Cameron sacrifice bunt. Jackie Marchetta walked to load the bases. Arkansas pitcher Schlichtman came in to relieve starter Valanna Lyons. Mylin Prieto drove a base hit to score Norfleet for the tie.
Arkansas took the lead again in the bottom of the fourth. Ashley Carter led off with a double through the middle. Sarah Hill came in to pinch run for her and Moore came in to replace Florida starter Amanda Knowles. Lisa Nieman hit a ball to Marchetta at short and Marchetta threw home to throw Hill out, but the throw was just a hair late and Arkansas took the 2-1 lead for good.
Amanda Knowles got the loss for Florida her record moves to 2-1. Schlichtman got the win for Arkansas. Her record improves to 6-7.
