Sunday March 9, 2003Men's Swimming Wraps Up Strong At All-American
Three University of Florida men's swimmers and two relay teams closed out the 2003 All-American Invitational with strong, top-10 finishes Sunday at the Jamail Center in Austin, Tex.
Both Gator 400-yard medley relay teams finished seventh and eighth respectively, and at the same time posted U.S. National qualifying times. UF's A-team of Jonathan Strauss (Miami, Fla.), Corey Welch (Larksville, Pa.), Justin Zumsteg (Rochester, Mich.) and Nick Borreca (Honolulu, Hawaii) finished seventh in a time of 3:20.00. The Gators' B-team of Jesus Dominguez (LaCoruna, Spain), Will Ratliff (Mt. Sterling, Ky.), Elliot Meena (Orlando, Fla.) and Bryan Yasinsac (Tallahassee, Fla.) finished eighth with a time of 3:30.33. Both times qualified the teams for the U.S. Nationals, which will be held next month in Bloomington, Ind. (Apr. 1-5).
Dominguez also had success individually on the afternoon, as he finished seventh in the 1,650-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 15:44.24. It marked just the second time this season that Dominguez swam the event, as he improved on his previous time by nearly 20 seconds. Teammate Mac Warren (North Palm Beach, Fla.) also finished in the top-10 in the event as he swam a 10th place time of 15:34.00.
Borreca continued with his success throughout the weekend by grabbing yet another top-10 finish, this time in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.06. Borreca finished second in the 100-yard butterfly and third in the 50-yard freestyle Saturday night.
The UF men's swimming and diving team will next be in action from March 27-29, as the Gators compete in the NCAA Championships. The event will also take place at the Jamail Aquatics Center at the University of Texas in Austin.
