Friday March 7, 2003Men's Golf T9th After Day One of Vegas Collegiate

The No. 4 University of Florida men's golf team is tied for ninth with a 288 (+2) following the first day of competition at the Las Vegas Intercollegiate at the Southern Highlands Golf Course in Las Vegas, Nev. Eighth-ranked Texas is the team leader at -7 (281) following the first 18 holes.

The Gators were led by junior Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) who is in a nine-way tie for 18th place at -1 (71). Villegas, who earlier this week was named to the Ben Hogan Award Watch List (nation's most outstanding collegiate golfer), shot under-par for the second consecutive round dating back to his final round 70 (-2) at the Puerto Rico Classic two weeks ago.

Villegas was followed by freshman Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.), who shot a first round even-par 72 to tie for 27th. The 72 was the lowest round for Every this season.

Fellow freshman Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) tied for 33rd following the first 18 holes with a +1 (73). James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) came in behind Stegmaier in a tie for 41st with a +2 (74). The other Gator to play during the first day was senior Jordan Code (Tampa, Fla.), who shot a +6 (78) to finished tied for 68th.

The Gators are tied with Southeastern Conference foe Alabama at +2 (290). Augusta State, who has finished ahead of the Gators in every tournament this spring, is tied for 13th at +5 (293). Defending NCAA Champion, Minnesota, is last at 15th at 306 (+18).

The second round of the Las Vegas Intercollegiate will begin at 8 a.m. PT Saturday. The final round will begin Sunday morning, March 9, at the same time.
