Tuesday March 4, 2003Softball Sweeps SEC Opening Doubleheader

Auburn, AL

The Florida softball team (19-8, 2-0) swept its Southeastern Conference opening double header today in Auburn Ala. The Gators defeated the Auburn Tigers (11-14, 0-2) 4-0 and 9-1 in five innings at Jane B. Moore Field.

In game one Mylin Prieto got the Gators started with a solo home run in the top of the second inning. Florida added another run in the top of the fourth Mandy Schuerman led off with a base hit and advanced two bases on an error by the Auburn right fielder. She scored on a Jenilee Garner sacrifice fly to center field.

The Gators capitalized on another Tiger miscue in the fifth. With two outs, Lindsey Cameron reached on an error by the Tiger shortstop and advanced to second. She scored on a Jennifer Mossadeghi double to centerfield to put the Gators up 3-0.

Pitcher Jenny Gladding scored Florida’s final run with a one-out solo homer in the top of the sixth.

Gladding’s record moves to 7-5 with the win. She tied her career and season high with 13 strikeouts in the game. Starter Janet Spivey received the loss for Auburn. Her record is now 4-6.

Jackie Marchetta got the Gators started with a leadoff walk in the top of the first in game two. Cameron followed with a base hit. Both runners advanced on a Mossadeghi sacrifice bunt. Marchetta scored and Cameron advanced to third on a Kristin Keyes wild pitch. Cameron scored on a Prieto RBI single up the middle. Schuerman knocked in Prieto with a double to right center. Jennifer Brown came in to pinch run for Schuerman at second. She scored on a Kristen Butler base hit for the 4-0 Florida lead.

Auburn had an answer in the bottom of the first and narrowed the Gator lead to three. With a runner on third, Sara Dean hit an RBI single up the middle to score Ashley Griffin. That would prove to be the only Tiger run of the game.

Marchetta was hit by a Keyes pitch to lead off the second. Mossadeghi was hit by another Keyes pitch with one out to put runners on first and second. Prieto reached on an error by the Tiger thirdbaseman to load the bases. Mnady Schuerman drew the walk to bring Marchetta in from third for the 5-1 lead. Gladding flew out to left field and Mossadeghi scored on a throwing error by the left fielder.

Florida added its seventh run in the top of the fourth. Prieto singled up the middle to score Cameron from second.

The Gators needed just to runs in the top of the fifth to have a chance at ending the game early due to the eight-run rule. Butler led off the inning with a double to left field. Brittani Houghton came in to pinch run for her. Mirelis Torres reached base on balls. Jackie Marchetta reached on a fielder’s choice. Houghton was out at third on the play. Cameron slammed a double to left field to score Torres and Marchetta for the 9-1 lead.

Prieto went 3-for-5 on the day with two runs scored and three RBI. Cameron was 3-for-6 with three runs and two RBI.

Schuerman earned the win for Florida. Her record is now 2-1. Keyes earned the loss. She is now 1-6 on the season.
