MT&F Finishes Second, Women Third at SEC Champs.
Florida's Joe Squittieri cleared a national-best 2.26m/7-5.00 to win the Southeastern Conference title in the high jump, and the Gator women's throwers were dominant in the weight throw, claiming seven of the top eight spots with Erin Gilreath as the winner, as the University of Florida completed competition at the SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships in Gainesville Sunday. The men's team finished second with 90.50 points, while the women placed third with 105 points.
Arkansas won both the men's and the women's SEC titles, as the Razorbacks scored 120 points, and the Lady 'Backs tallied 129 points for the trophy.
Florida got off to a quick start in the final day of competition with Antonio Emperator placing fifth in the weight throw, resetting his own school record by throwing 19.33m/63-5.00. The Gators picked up steam behind Squittieri's high jump, as he defeated teammate and defending SEC Indoor Champion Matt Vincent with a jump of 2.26m/7-5.00. Squittieri eclipsed his pervious best of 7-3, which led the nation coming into Sunday's action. The distance medley relay team of Shane Stroup, Dwight Ruff, Moise Joseph and Steve Zieminski turned up the heat late in the competition, as Zieminski pushed past Kentucky's Kris Landers at the end of the mile to grab the victory in the event, and the DMR's time of 9:41.68 is 10th best in school history.
"I'm extremely pleased," said UF head men's coach Mike Holloway. "I told them after the meet that I don't know that I've ever been more proud of a group of guys. We've talked about putting passion and pride into what we do, and they did that all weekend long."
In the first sprint event of the day, Josh Walker and Chris Carswell put points on the board for the Gators with their second and 6th place finishes, respectively. Ahmad Jasmine came in second in the 55m dash in the time of 6.23 second, which is tied for the fifth-best mark in UF history, while Kyle Farmer also added points for Florida in the event, finishing seventh in a time of 6.28. Farmer also automatically qualified in the 200-meter dash with his second-place time of 21.10
The story of the SEC Championships for the women's team was the throwers. After scoring all of Florida's 25 points in the shot put on Friday, the throwers added 35 points in the weight throw, claiming seven of the eight spots, including the top four. Gilreath won her fourth weight throw event of the season with a mark of 21.57m/70-9.25, which is the top mark in the country and is third best all-time in school history.
Andrea Bliss continued to impress in the 55m hurdles, finished second behind LSU's Lolo Jones by just .03 seconds. Her time was good enough for fourth best in school history and was also an automatic qualifying time. Faith Rein finished third in the 400m with an automatic qualifying time of 52.96, while Novlene Williams also scored for the Gators in the event, placing sixth at 54.20. Kristina Bratton came back from running just over 2:11 in the 800m Saturday to finish second in the event with an automatic-qualifying time of 2:05.78. The Gators got points in the pole vault from Stephanie Hood, who finished fifth (3.91m/12-10.00) and Anna Salzano, who finished seventh (3.76m/12-4.00). The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Williams, Niki Benjamin, Bratton and Rein rounded out the scoring for Florida, finishing third in a time of 3:36.93.
"We thought we could score 110 [points], said Florida women's head coach Tom Jones. "We gave up some points in a couple events that just got pretty competitive. But our kids competed pretty tough today. We hung in there."
Arkansas' Alistair Cragg won the Commissioner's Trophy on the men's side after winning the mile and the 3,000 to score 20 points for the Razorbacks. There was a three-way tie for the women, as Hyleas Fountain of Georgia, Elva Goulbourne of Auburn and Arkansas' Christin Wurth all scored 28 points for their teams.
Members of both the men's and women's teams will participate in several Last Chance Meets next weekend in preparation for the NCAA Indoor Championships March 14-15.
