Gainesville, FL

Freshman James Vargas is currently tied for 21st at the PR Classic.

The No. 4 University of Florida men's golf team is currently in seventh place with a +15 (591) following the first two rounds of the Puerto Rico Classic at the Rio Mar Resort in San Juan, P.R. The Gators are 17 strokes behind leader North Carolina State, who is at 574 (-2).

As a team, the Gators were nine strokes better than they were in the first round as UF fired a +3 (291) in the tournament's second 18-holes.

"We had a lower score today, but we still weren't quite as sharp as I had hoped to be," Gator Head Coach Buddy Alexander said. "The wind was a lot calmer today than it was yesterday, and the course was a bit easier to play."

Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) was the only Gator to shoot in the red numbers on the day, as the freshman fired a one-under 71 to climb 15 spots from 43rd following the first round to a tie for 28th at +5 (149).

Freshman James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) and junior Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) are UF's highest finishers for the first two rounds, as both are tied for 21st at +4 (148). Vargas posted his second 74 (+2) in as many rounds and Villegas rebounded from yesterday's 75, to shoot a one-over 73 in the second.

Senior Jordan Code (Tampa, Fla.) and freshman Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) are the final two Gators to round out the team scoring, as both are tied for 35th at +6 (150). Every was four shots better in the second round (73) from his first round 77. Code shot a +4 (76) during the second day.

Defending national champion Minnesota is in second place at +1 (577), while Oklahoma State rounds out the top three with a +4 (580). No. 1 Clemson is fourth at 10-over with a 586.

The Puerto Rico Classic will conclude Wednesday afternoon with the final round. The last 18-holes will begin at 8 a.m.
