Sunday February 23, 2003Men's Golf Tied For Sixth At Puerto Rico Classic

The No. 4 University of Florida men's golf team is tied for sixth following the first day of competition with a 12-over par (300) in the Puerto Rico Classic at the Rio Mar Resort in San Juan.

N.C. State is the leader after firing a 288 (E) following the first 18 holes. UF is tied with Northwestern and East Tennessee State in the sixth spot.

Freshman James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) and senior Jordan Code (Tampa, Fla.) were the highest finishers for Florida, as both finished in a seven-way tie for 17th. Both shot a +2 (74) in the first round. Junior Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) was right behind Vargas and Code, as he shot a 75 (+3), which was good enough for a tie for 24th.

Freshman Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) finished in a tie for 43rd with a +5 (77). Fellow freshman Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) finished 51st with 78 (+6).

The second round of the Puerto Rico Classic will begin Monday morning at 8 a.m.
