Freshman Brett Stegmaier finished tied for seventh overall at the Mercedes Benz Collegiate.

The No. 4 University of Florida men's golf team finished fifth of 15 teams at the 2003 Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championship at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra, Fla. played Feb. 17-18. The Gators shot a three-round total of 285-292-295=872 (+8). Seventh-ranked Augusta State (852) won the tournament by 10 shots over second place Clemson.

Two Gator freshmen finished in the top-10, as James Vargas and Brett Stegmaier both tied for seventh at the conclusion of the event. The two competitors finished just three shots behind the medalist D.J. Trahan of Clemson. Both finished the event two under par as Stegmaier shot rounds of 68-72-74=214 while Vargas fired rounds of 69-72-73=214 on the par-72 course. Both freshmen earned their second top-10 finishes in as many events this spring, as Vargas finished fourth at the Gator Invitational last weekend, while Stegmaier finished in a tie for ninth.

Junior Camilo Villegas moved up nearly 10 spots to a tie for 37th in the final round after shooting a 73 on Tuesday. Villegas, the defending individual champion in the tournament, shot rounds of 73-76-73=222 (+6) during the tournament.

Seniors Ari Savolainen and Jordan Code finished tied for 54th and 65th respectively. Savolainen shot rounds of 75-72-79=226 (+10) while Code shot 75-80-75=230 (+14).

Freshman Ryan Cochran was the Gators' individual competitor, as he finished 74th after shooting rounds of 76+80+81=235.

The Gators' will be action again when they compete at the Puerto Rico Classic on Rio Mar Resort Course from Feb. 23-25.
