Saturday February 8, 2003Men's Golf In Second After Day One Of Gator Invite
The No. 5 University of Florida menís golf team is in second place with a 17-over-par 577 following the first day of the SunTrust Gator Invitational, Saturday at the University Golf Course. The Gators trail No. 2 Augusta State by six shots, as the Panthers shot an 11-over 571.
The Gators will be a part of the last group to tee off Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m., as Florida looks to capture its 18th Gator Invitational team championship in the 26th year of the tournament. Joining the Gators and the Panthers will be Georgia Southern, who finished the day in third at +19 (579).
The Gators were led by freshman Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.), who shot a 141 (+1) during the first two rounds to finish in a four-way tie for fifth place. Stegmaier rebounded in the second round to shoot four-under (66), after shooting a three-over 73 in the first round. Freshman James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) and senior Jordan Code (Tampa, Fla.) were the Gatorsí next highest finishers, as they tied for 13th with three-over 143s.
Junior Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) ended the first day in 39th at 10-over (150), and senior Dalton Melnyk (Jacksonville, Fla.) tied for 52nd at +12 (152). In addition to those five, senior Ari Savolainen (Helsinki, Finland) competed as an individual and finished with Stegmaier in a tie for fifth at +1 (141).
The third and final round of the Gator Invitational will begin Sunday, Feb. 9, at 8 a.m. at the University Golf Course.
