Saturday February 1, 2003Swim & Dive Teams Sweep Tennessee

Gainesville, FL

The University of Florida men's and women's swimming and diving teams pulled off the sweep of Southeastern Conference rival Tennessee, Saturday afternoon at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium. The No. 2 women's team cruised to an easy 132-101 win over the Lady Vols, while the No. 6 men came from behind to defeat Tennessee 122-121. The women improved to 10-1 overall and 5-1 in the SEC. The men snapped a two-meet losing streak and ran their record to 8-3 and 4-2 in the conference.

The men, who trailed the entire afternoon, entered the final event (400-yard freestyle relay) down 114-112. The Gators, who trailed by 25 points on two occasions, used a first-place finish by the team of Gabriel Mangabeira (Piratininga, Brazil), Kris Wiebeck (Tampa, Fla.), Nick Borreca (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Adam Sioui (Ontario, Canada) in a time of 3:01.00 to grab the win. Overall, the Gators won the last seven swimming events of the meet.

UF was led by freshman Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.), who won three events for the second straight meet. He has now won eight events in the last three dual meets for the Gators. Lochte got his personal victory parade going in the 200-yard individual medley with a top time of 1:47.96, which was good enough to meet a NCAA provisional qualifying mark. He didn't have time to rest, as Lochte turned around and won the next event for Florida with a time of 1:49.00 in the 200-yard butterfly. Lochte's victory in the 500-yard freestyle (4:25.85) brought UF within two of the Vols at 95-93 entering the men's three-meter diving competition.

"Ryan had an outstanding day," Gator Head Coach Gregg Troy said. "He has really been swimming well lately. He was a big boost for us today."

Tennessee pushed the lead back out to nine at 108-99 following the three-meter diving, but seniors Ian Chadsey (Reston, Va.) and Philip Norris (Longwood, Fla.) finished one-two in the 200-yard breaststroke with times of 2:00.47 and 2:01.84 respectively to cut Tennessee's lead to two entering the 400 free relay. Norris' time in the event was a season-best for him.

Other winners on the men's side included Sioui, who won the 200-yard freestyle with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:38.67. Junior Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil) won the 100-yard freestyle over childhood friend, UT's Renato Gueraldi, with a time of 44.30. Fellow junior Chris Kellam (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) was UF's other winner, as he placed first in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 1:45.30. Both Jayme's and Kellam's times were NCAA provisional times.

On the women's side, the Gators won 9-of-10 events and finished with top scores in the last three events they exhibitioned. Florida also placed one-two in 8-of-11 swimming events.

Florida's relay teams highlighted the meet as they swam a total of four NCAA provisional qualifying times. The Gators began the meet finishing with the top three times in the 400-yard medley relay. The winning 400-yard medley relay team consisting of freshman Jamie Reid (Orlando, Fla.), freshman Vipa Bernhardt (Bad Hersfeld, Germany), senior Renate duPlessis (Capetown, South Africa) and junior Chantal Gibney (Dubland, Ireland) finished with a provisional time of 3:43.11. The medley relay team of sophomore Maureen Farrell (Northridge, Calif.), freshman Danielle Duncan (Overland Park, Kan.), senior Cara Teague (Sugar Land, Texas) and senior Diane Tennison (Lafayette, La.) placed second with a provisional time of 3:44.73.

The Gators also swam the top three times in the 400-yard freestyle relay, swimming two more provisional times. The relay team of freshman Mary Uhle (Sankt Ingbert, Germany), junior Jaime Ellis (Spring, Texas), Teague and sophomore Meredith Green (Chapel Hill, N.C.) finished with a top time of 3:25.48. The relay team consisting of Tennison, Farrell, duPlessis and Gibney also had a provisional time of 3:25.48.

Freshman Jamie Tannhauser (Seattle, Wash.) touched the wall in 9:58.77 in the 1,000-yard freestyle, winning the event for the first time this season.

Uhle swam her fifth provisional time in the 200-yard freestyle with a winning time of 1:49.75. Senior Anna Chapman (St. Simons Island, Ga.) also swam a provisional time of 1:50.49 in the 200 free.

Sophomore Rebecca Harper (Richmond, Va.) swam her ninth provisional time in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1: 59.10. Junior Casey Seland (Longwood, Fla.) finished third in the 200 fly in 2:01.59, her fourth provisional time of the season. duPlessis also swam a provisional time of 2:01.84 as an exhibition swimmer in the event.

Junior Sara McLarty (Deland, Fla.) won the 200-yard backstroke in a provisional time of 1:59.67. McLarty has now swam eight automatic qualifying times and nine provisional times.

Junior diver Nicole Bolt (Orlando, Fla.) continued her success on the diving board as she won the one-meter springboard competition and placed second on three-meter with scores of 285.38 and 309.75, respectively.

Both Florida swimming and diving teams will be back in action next Saturday, Feb. 8 at 11 a.m. when they host Florida Atlantic at the O'Connell Center for the last home meet of the season. All the seniors from both teams will be honored before the meet.
