Saturday January 25, 2003Swim & Dive Teams Split Meet With Alabama

Gainesville, FL

The University of Florida men's and women's swimming and diving teams split their dual meet with Alabama Saturday night at the Don Gambril Olympic Pool in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The No. 2 women's team bounced back from a tough loss to Auburn Friday night to beat the Crimson Tide 129-112. The No. 6 men lost their second meet in as many days, falling to Alabama 128.5-108.5.

The women improved to 10-1 overall and 4-1 in the Southeastern Conference. The men slipped to 7-3 and 3-2 in the conference.

On the women's side, junior Sara McLarty (Deland, Fla.) led the Gators, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:44.34 and the 200-yard butterfly in a provisional qualifying time of 1:59.48.

Freshman Jamie Reid (Orlando, Fla.) swam an automatic qualifying time of 1:57.57 to finish first in the 200-yard backstroke. Reid also finished second in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a collegiate best time of 9:52.87.

Junior Chantal Gibney (Dublin, Ireland) won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.28 and senior Renate duPlessis touched the wall in 24.57 to finish second. Sophomore Maureen Farrell (Northridge, Calif.) placed first in the 100-yard freestyle with a collegiate-best time of 51.36. Sophomore Meredith Green (Chapel Hill, N.C.) also won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:55.19.

Freshman Vipa Bernhardt (Bad Hersfeld, Germany) swam an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:21.78 in the 400-yard individual medley. Sophomore Rebecca Harper also swam a provisional time in the 200-yard butterfly (2:01.78). Freshman Danielle Duncan (Overland Park, Kan.) finished runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.08), recording her first NCAA provisional qualifying time of the season.

Junior diver Kristen Connor (Gainesville, Fla.) placed third on the one-meter springboard with a score of 266.10 and freshman Jessica Ranieri (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) finished fourth in the three-meter springboard competition with 267.90 points.

On the men's side, the Gators were led by freshman Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) for the second night in a row. Lochte, the Southeastern Conference Athlete of the Week for Jan. 21, won all three events that he competed in, earning a total of 27 points for Florida. Lochte started things off with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:38.82. He turned around and picked up his second victory of the night four events later with a top time in the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 3:53.31. The freshman concluded his brilliant night with a win in the 500-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 4:26.83. All three times were good enough to meet NCAA Provisional Qualifying marks. In all, Lochte won five events in the two meet trip through the state of Alabama. He won two events, the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 200-yard butterfly against Auburn.

Junior Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil) was the Gators' other successful swimmer on the night, as he won both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles. Jayme started his winning ways with a top time of 20.63 in the 50 free. He followed that up with the top time in the 100 free at 44.61. The time in the 100 free also met a NCAA provisional standard.

The only other Gator swimmer to record a win on the night was sophomore Gabriel Mangabeira (Piratininga, Brazil), won the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 1:49.12.

Senior Ian Chadsey (Reston, Va.) finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:01.13. The runner-up finish marked the end of six straight dual meets that Chadsey either won or posted the top time in the event.

Both men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be back in action at home next Saturday, Feb. 1 at 11 a.m., when the Gators take on SEC rival Tennessee at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium. Gates three will open at 9:30 a.m. Parking will be available in the O'Connell Center parking garage and at the north end of Percy Beard Track. Lots will also open at 9:30 a.m.
