Friday January 24, 2003Swim and Dive Teams Fall To Auburn

Gainesville, FL

The University of Florida men's and women's swimming and diving teams both lost to Auburn Friday evening. The second ranked women lost their first dual meet of the season (9-1, 3-1 SEC) as they were defeated by top-ranked Auburn 125-113 and the No. 6 men's team (7-2, 3-1 SEC) lost 119-90 to the second ranked Tigers.

On the women's side, the Gators were led by junior Sara McLarty (Deland, Fla.). McLarty swam three NCAA qualifying times, including two automatic times. She won the 500-yard freestyle in a automatic qualifying time of 4:45.10 and placed second in the 400-yard individual medley in another qualifying time of 4:13.49. McLarty also swam a provisional time in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.84).

Freshman Vipa Bernhardt (Bad Hersfeld, Germany) swam her second automatic qualifying time of the season with a win in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:12.47).

Sophomore Rebecca Harper (Richmond, Va.) was one-one hundredth of a second from automatically qualifying for the 200-yard butterfly with a winning time of 1:58.99. Freshman Jamie Reid (Orlando, Fla.) won the 200-yard backstroke with a provisional time of 1:57.23.

The 200-yard medley relay team consisting of senior Renate duPlessis (Capetown, South Africa), Bernhardt, senior Cara Teague (Sugar Land, Texas) and sophomore Maureen Farrell (Northridge, Calif.) swam a second place, provisional qualifying time of 1:41.93.

Junior diver Nicole Bolt (Orlando, Fla.) recorded two second place finishes on the one- and three-meter springboards with scores of 270.44 and 296.93. Freshman Jessica Ranieri (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) placed third on the one-meter with a score of 250.12.

On the men's side, the Gators were led by freshman Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.), who picked up two victories for the second straight dual meet this spring. Lochte won the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 9:02.74. The win came a four seconds faster than Auburn's senior James Galloway (9:06.48). Lochte followed up the performance later on in the night, as he took the top spot in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:48.17.

Two other UF swimmers were victorious on the night, as senior Ian Chadsey (Reston, Va.) won the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:00.29. The time was good enough to meet a NCAA Provisional qualifying mark. Sophomore Kris Wiebeck (Tampa, Fla.) won the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:34.12.

Florida closed out the competition with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Brian Hartley (Indianapolis, Ind.), Wiebeck, Mac Warren (North Palm Beach, Fla.) and Greg King (Miami, Fla.) won the event in a time of 1:25.97.

Both Gator men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be back in action Saturday night, as they take on Alabama at 7 p.m. in Tuscaloosa.
