Saturday January 11, 2003Women's Swim & Dive Defeats No. 5 Texas 170-128

The second ranked University of Florida women's swimming and diving team improved their perfect record to 8-0 by defeating No. 5 Texas 170-128 Saturday evening at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium.

Today's meet began with the 400-yard medley relay teams finishing first and second with a crowd of over 3,000 looking on as they ventured from the thrilling last second men's basketball victory to the start of the meet. The winning relay team swam a provisional time of 3:43.99, consisting of freshman Jamie Reid (Orlando, Fla.), freshman Vipa Bernhardt (Bad Herfeld, Germany), senior Cara Teague (Sugar Land, Texas) and junior Chantal Gibney (Dublin, Ireland). The second place relay team consisted of sophomore Maureen Farrell (Northridge, Calif.), freshman Danielle Duncan (Overland Park, Kan.), sophomore Rebecca Harper (Richmond, Va.) and freshman Mary Uhle (Sankt Ingbert, Germany).

Individually, the meet was highlighted by two NCAA automatic qualifying times and 16 provisional qualifying times for the Gators.

Junior Sara McLarty (Deland, Fla.) won three events and swam three NCAA qualifying times to bring her season total to 11. She won the 400-yard individual medley with an automatic qualifying time of 4:15.08. McLarty also won the 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard freestyle with provisional qualifying times of 1:59.69 and 1:48.10, respectively.

In the first individual event of the evening, Florida finished the 1,650-yard freestyle with the top four times. Sophomore Meredith Green (Chapel Hill, N.C.) won the event with her second automatic qualifying time of 16:19.81 in the 1,650 free. Freshman Jamie Tannhauser (Seattle, Wash.) finished second with a provisional qualifying time of 16:28.04 and senior Anna Chapman finished third with a provisional time of 16:43.39. Junior Blair Beard (Sarasota, Fla.) placed fourth with a career-best time of 17:09.91.

The freshmen swimmers were also successful for Florida. Reid won the 200-yard backstroke with a provisional time of 1:58.80 and Bernhardt won the 200-yard breaststroke with a provisional time of 2:15.40. Bernhardt also placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a provisional time of 1:02.79. Tannhauser swam a career-best time of 4:52.60 to provisionally qualify in the 500-yard freestyle.

Senior Renate duPlessis (Capetown, South Africa) swam two provisional times, including the 100-yard backstroke, finishing second with a time of 55.62. duPlessis also finished second in the 100-yard butterfly in 55.21.

Junior diver Nicole Bolt (Orlando, Fla.) swept the diving events as she won both the one- and three-meter springboard competitions with scores of 302.40 and 311.78, respectively. Freshman Jessica Ranieri (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) placed fourth on the one-meter springboard with a score of 270.00.

Other provisional qualifiers for the Gators included: Farrell in the 100- and 200-yard back (55.92/2:00.58); junior Jaime Ellis (Spring, Texas) in the 200-yard free (1:50.65); Reid in the 100-yard back (56.06); Harper in the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.93).

The Florida women's team will travel to the University of Miami to take on the Hurricanes Monday, Jan. 13 at 2 p.m.
