Saturday November 23, 2002No. 7 Men's Swim & Dive Defeats No. 11 Georgia

Gainesville, FL

Leading by only one, 94-93 with three events left, the No. 7 University of Florida men's swimming and diving team won all three to pull out an exciting 130-111 victory over No. 11 Georgia, Saturday afternoon at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium.

The Gators ran their record to 6-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in Southeastern Conference action. UF also won its second straight over Georgia, as the Gators defeated the Bulldogs 137-104 in Athens, Ga. last year.

"This was a really exciting meet to be a part of," Gator Head Coach Gregg Troy said. "The guys were tested and they responded terrifically."

The late heroics began with sophomore diver Zach Wilcox (Yarrow Point, Wash.) as he won the three-meter diving competition with a score of 351.15. It was the second victory of the day for Wilcox, who started the men's competition with a victory in the one-meter diving with a score of 337.35. Wilcox easily met the qualifying standards for the 2003 NCAA Diving Zones in both events. He has accomplished the fete in both events in all seven meets this season.

Wilcox's victory was followed by senior Ian Chadsey (Reston, Va.), who won the 200-yard breaststroke with a season-best time of 2:00.20. Chadsey has recorded the fastest time in the 200 Breast in the last five meets that he has swam in the event. The time was also good enough to meet the NCAA provisional qualifying standard for the national championships.

The Gators sealed the team victory with a first-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Junior Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil), junior Scott Schultz (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), sophomore Kris Wiebeck (Tampa, Fla.) and freshman Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) won the event with a time of 3:00.97 -- a full three seconds faster than Georgia's second-place team.

"It was a close one at the end," Troy said of the meet. "Everybody really picked up their level of competition."

Overall, six UF swimmers met NCAA provisional qualifying marks. In addition to Chadsey, Jayme was victorious in both the 50- (20.06) and the 100-yard freestyles (44.20), and met the provisional marks in both. Jayme has now recorded two provisional marks in each of the last three meets. Lochte was the other Gator to meet two provisional marks on the afternoon, as he swam a second-place time of 1:47.63 in the 200-yard individual medley and third-place time of 4:27.11 in the 500-yard freestyle. Junior Chris Kellam (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) was the other Gator to meet a provisional time with a first-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:46.17.

UF's 400-yard medley relay team was also victorious, as the team of Kellam, Chadsey, Gabriel Mangabeira (Piratininga, Brazil) and Adam Sioui (Ontario, Canada) won with a time of 3:19.16.

Florida will be back in action from Dec. 5-7 as the Gators compete at the U.S. Open in Minneapolis, Minn.
