Tuesday November 19, 2002Swim & Dive Pulls Off Second Sweep In Five Days

Gainesville, FL

The University of Florida men's and women's swimming and diving teams pulled off their second sweep in the last five days, as the Gators defeated in-state rivals Florida State Tuesday at the Bim Stults Aquatics Center in Tallahassee. The women won by a final score of 145-98, while the men cruised to a 143-100 victory.

The third-ranked women remained perfect on the season by raising their record to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the Southeastern Conference. The men ran their record to 5-1 and 2-0 in the SEC.

On the women's side, the 400-yard freestyle relay team consisting of junior Chantal Gibney (Dublin, Ireland), freshman Mary Uhle (Sankt Ingbert), senior Diane Tennison (Lafayette, La.) and senior Cara Teague (Sugar Land, Texas) scored the biggest win of the night finishing the event in just under seven seconds ahead of their competitors. The 400-yard medley relay team of freshman Jamie Reid (Orlando, Fla.), freshman Vipa Bernhardt (Bad Hersfeld, Germany), Teague and Gibney also won with a time of 3:46.05.

Junior Sara McLarty swam yet another NCAA qualifying time, winning the 200-yard individual medley with a provisional time of 2:04.23. Sophomore Jessica Schrock (Palm Harbor, Fla.) recorded her first win of the season, finishing first in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:10.39.

In the 200-yard butterfly the Gators swept the event as Teague took the gold (2:02.83) and junior Casey Seland (Longwood, Fla.), senior Renate duPlessis (Capetown, South Africa) and senior Kim Ecott (Cooper City, Fla.) finished second, third and fourth, respectively. Other winners for the Gators included senior Anna Chapman (St. Simons Island, Ga.) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.75), sophomore Maureen Farrell (Northridge, Calif.) in the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.69) and Reid in the 500-yard freestyle (4:56.20).

Junior diver Kristen Connor (Gainesville, Fla.) finished second on the one-meter and three-meter springboard with scores of 263.85 and 290.70, respectively. Freshman Jessica Ranieri (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) finished third (235.35) and fourth (247.95) in the one- and three-meter springboard events.

On the men's side, the Gators were led by the Brazilian Combination of junior Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil) and sophomore Gabriel Mangabeira (Piratininga, Brazil), as both were victorious in two events on the night. The pair were also double winners in last Friday's meet with South Carolina.

Jayme won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:39.28, while also meeting the NCAA provisional mark in the event. It was the third event this season that Jayme has met the provisional mark. The other events are the 50 Free and the 100 Free. Jayme's second victory came in the 100 Free with a time of 45.18.

Mangabeira was victorious in both the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle. Mangabeira's time in the 200 IM was 1:53.70, and 4:38.64 in the 500 Free.

Sophomore Jesus Dominguez (LaCoruna, Spain) got things started with the individual victories, as he won the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 9:32.94. Sophomore Greg King (Miami, Fla.) was crowned the winner in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 1:52.36. The 200-yard backstroke saw sophomore Kris Wiebeck (Tampa, Fla.) win with a top time of 1:51.59.

Sophomore Zach Wilcox (Yarrow Point, Wash.) won the three-meter diving with a total score of 295.88.

UF was a double-winner in the relays, as the Gator 4x400-yard medley relay team took first with a time of 3:22.37. The team was led by Mangabeira, Ian Chadsey (Reston, Va.), Adam Sioui (Ontario, Canada), and Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.). Florida closed out the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as the team of Wiebeck, Sioui, Scott Schultz (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Jayme won in a time of 3:05.10.

Florida will be back in action Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium, as the Gators host SEC rival Georgia.
