Friday November 15, 2002Swim & Dive Teams Sweep South Carolina

Gainesville, FL

The University of Florida men's and women's swimming and diving teams returned from an extended period of rest to defeat the South Carolina Gamecocks Friday at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium. The No. 5 women's team downed USC 136-102, while the No. 7 men won by a score of 130-104.

With the victories, the women's team remained perfect on the season at 5-0 and 2-0 in the Southeastern Conference, while the men improved to 4-1 and an equaling 2-0 mark in the conference.

On the women's side, the meet was highlighted by one NCAA automatic qualifying time and eight provisional qualifying times.

Junior Sara McLarty swam her second automatic qualifying time in the 500-yard freestyle, winning the race in a time of 4:45.69. McLarty also won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.96, swimming an NCAA provisional qualifying time.

Sophomore Maureen Farrell and freshman Mary Uhle each swam provisional NCAA qualifying times in the 200-yard freestyle, placing second and third with times of 1:50.35 and 1:50.58, respectively. Junior Chantal Gibney also swam a provisional qualifying time in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.11.

Freshman Jamie Reid touched the wall first in the 200-yard backstroke with a provisional qualifying time of 1:59.16. Freshman Vipa Bernhardt won the 200-yard individual medley and swam her fourth NCAA provisional qualifying time of the season (2:04.31).

Junior Rebecca Harper and senior Diane Tennison also swam provisional qualifying times in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing first and second with times of 2:00.92 and 2:02.23, respectively.

Junior diver Nicole Bolt won the three-meter springboard competition with a score of 303.07 and finished third on the one-meter springboard with a score of 274.65. Freshman Jessica Ranieri finished fourth on the three-meter springboard.

The Gators won nine of the eleven events they scored in and finished with top times in the last two events they exhibitioned.

On the men's side, the Gators won every event but one that they scored in. Florida built a comfortable 130-57 lead and exhibitioned the last few events to not make the score so lopsided.

Two Gator swimmers recorded NCAA provisional qualifying times on the night. Junior Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil) did it twice on the night. He recorded his third and fourth NCAA B marks of the season, as he swam a season-best time of 20.16 in the 50-yard freestyle. The provisional mark stands at 20.33. Jayme has met the mark twice in the 50 free. Jayme also made it twice on the season that he met the provisional mark in the 100-yard freestyle, as he won the event with a time of 44.40. Freshman Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) notched his first NCAA provisional time of the season, as he swam a 1:49.27 in the 200-yard individual medley. The provisional time for the NCAA Championships is 1:49.91.

Sophomore Jan Wolfgarten (Frankfurt, Germany) got the streak of wins rolling for the Gators, as he won the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 9:19.62. Fellow sophomore Gabriel Mangabeira (Piratininga, Brazil) followed with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:39.64. Mangabeira was also a two-time winner on the night, as he was victorious in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:50.29. Junior Chris Kellam (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) picked up his first win of the season, as he won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:50.53. Freshman Brian Hartley (Indianapolis, Ind.) won his second race of the season, as he took first in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:33.67. And for the fourth straight meet, Ian Chadsey (Reston, Va.) finished with the fastest time in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:01.34.

Florida was victorious in the 400-yard medley relay, as the team of Kellam, Chadsey, Adam Sioui (Ontario, Canada) and Scott Schultz (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) finished with a top time of 3:23.67.

Florida will be back in action Tuesday night, as the Gators travel to Tallahasse to take on Florida State. The meet will begin at 6 p.m. UF will be back home next Saturday, Nov. 23, as the Gators host SEC rival Georgia at the O'Connell Center starting at 1 p.m.
