Saturday October 26, 2002Swim & Dive Teams Defeat Penn State

The University of Florida menís and womenís swimming and diving teams remained perfect in the 2002-03 season with a sweep of Penn State, Saturday at the McCoy Natatorium in University Park, Pa. The women won by a score of 141-87, while the men won 131-96.

The womenís team won all 10 events they scored in as they improved to 4-0. They also finished with top times in the three events they exhibitioned. Three women set new McCoy Natatorium pool records and five swam NCAA provisional qualifying times.

The menís team improved to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in its history against the Nittany Lions. The Gators opened up a commanding 131-37 lead with three events left, as Head Coach Gregg Troy exhibitioned the remaining three events. The men won every event that they did not exhibition, and also recorded the top times in the events that they exhibitioned.

The women's 400-yard medley relay team consisting of sophomore Maureen Farrell (Northridge, Calif.), freshman Vipa Bernhardt (Bad Hersfeld, Germany), senior Cara Teague (Sugar Land, Texas) and junior Chantal Gibney (Dublin, Ireland) began the meet setting a new McCoy Natatorium pool record with a time of 3:44.70. The previous record was 3:46.24 set by Penn State in 2001.

Junior Sara McLarty (DeLand, Fla.) set a new pool record in the 1,000-yard freestyle, winning the race with a time of 9:41.53 to break the previous record of 9:57.30. Freshman Jamie Reid (Orlando, Fla.) swam a time of 1:58.79 in the 200-yard backstroke to break the previous pool record of 1:59.67.

Sophomore Rebecca Harper (Richmond, Va.) won the 200-yard butterfly with a provisional qualifying time of 2:00.86, just missing the pool record of 2:00.48. Bernhardt swam two NCAA provisional qualifying times as an exhibition swimmer in the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard breaststroke with times of 2:03.99 and 2:15.76, respectively.

Junior Nicole Bolt (Orlando, Fla.) highlighted the diving portion, winning both the one- and three-meter springboard competitions with scores of 294.52 and 335.25, respectively. Other winners for the Gators included: freshman Mary Uhle (Sankt Ingbert, Germany) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.29), Farrell in the 50-yard freestyle (24.09), freshman Danielle Duncan (Overland Park, Kan.) and Gibney in the 100-yard freestyle (51.50).

On the menís side, senior Ian Chadsey (Reston, Va.) fought off a cold to break the pool-record in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:00.61. The old record was 2:01.03, which was set last spring. Freshman Mac Warren (North Palm Beach, Fla.) picked up the first collegiate victory of his career in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:53.70. Junior Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil) met the NCAA B qualifying mark in the 100-yard freestyle for the second time this season with a time of 44.77. Jayme also met the mark against LSU in the first meet of the season. The time is on a provisional basis. Jayme was a double-winner, as he was also victorious in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.62. He edged out teammate Gabriel Mangabeira (Piratininga, Brazil) by three-tenths of a second, as Mangabeira finished second with a 20.65. Mangabeira did grab a victory in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:47.36.

Other Gator winners included: Scott Kaufmann (Sparks, Nev.) in the 1,000 Free (9:21.20); Kris Wiebeck (Tampa, Fla.) in the 200 Free (1:39.74); and Greg King (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) in the 200 Fly (1:52.98).

Freshman diver Chris Comfort (Coral Springs, Fla.) qualified for the NCAA Diving Zones in the spring in the three-meter dive with a point total of 326.85. Sophomore diver Zach Wilcox (Yarrow Point, Wash.) just missed the school-record of 345.75 in the one-meter dive with his first-place score of 342.60. Wilcox also scored a 320.70 in the three-meter. Wilcox has met the qualifying mark in the one- and three-meters in all three meets this season.

The Gatorsí 400-yard medley relay B team of Chris Kellam (Mt. Juliet, Tenn), Chadsey, Mangabeira and Jayme won the event in a time of 3:24.58.
