Tuesday October 8, 2002Men's Golf Wraps Up Play At NCAA Preview

Gainesville, FL

The No. 2 University of Florida men's golf team shot a 917 (+53) to finish in 12th-place at the 2002 NCAA Fall Preview in Stillwater, Okla. Tuesday. The Gators were within seven strokes of the leader, Augusta State, following the first five holes at the Karsten Creek Golf Course. But a string of bogeys ruined Florida's chances of placing in the top five for the third straight tournament this season.

Florida's top finisher was junior Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia). Villegas shot an 80 in the final round to finish the 54-hole tournament in 31st-place, as he shot an 11-over-par 227. It was just the second time in the last 15 tournaments that Villegas failed to finish in the top 20 in the indivdual standings.

Freshman James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) was Florida's next highest finisher, as the 2001-02 Golfweek/Titleist Junior Player of the Year finished in a tie for 32nd with a 228 (+12). Senior Jordan Code followed with a 45th-place finish at +15 (231), while freshman Matt Every was right behind in 49th at 16-over (232). Freshman Ryan Cochran was the Gators' other player, as he finished in a three-way tie for 69th at +30 (246).

Augusta State won the team title with a 16-under, while No. 1 Clemson came in second at +22. Arizona finished out the top three at 29-over.

The Gators will be back in action Oct. 14-15, as they host the Gary Koch Invitational in Tampa, Fla. The 36-hole tournament will begin on Monday with a 9 a.m. start at Old Memorial Golf Course.
