Monday October 7, 2002Men's Golf Ninth After Two Rounds of NCAA Preview

Gainesville, FL

The No. 2 ranked University of Florida men's golf team is currently in ninth-place following the first two rounds of the Ping/Golfweek NCAA Preview in Stillwater, Okla. Monday's events featured back-to-back rounds, as two Gators are among the top 13 golfers in the individual ranks at the par 72, 7,194 yard Karsten Creek Golf Course.

Freshman James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) completed his first day by finishing in a five-way tie for fourth-place at one-over-par (145). Vargas is only two shots back of the leaders, Augusta State's duo of Emmett Turner and Scott Jamieson, who are both at 143 (-1). The 2001-02 Golfweek/Titleist Junior Golfer of the Year, Vargas shot a one-over 73 during the first 18, but rebounded to shoot an even 72 in the afternoon.

Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) rebounded from a rough first round in which he shot a 78 (+6) to shoot a three-under 69, to move into a four-way tie for 13th at plus-three (147). Both Vargas and Villegas will enter the final round of the tournament ahead of the nation's No. 1 ranked collegiate golfer, Georgia Tech's Troy Matteson, who shot a +5 (149) during the day.

Senior Jordan Code (Tampa, Fla.) and freshman Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) ended the first day among a 10-way tie for 46th at +11 (155). Fellow freshman Ryan Cochran (Paducah, Kent.) finished the first 36-holes in a three-way tie for 66th at 17-over (161).
