The third-ranked Florida Gator volleyball team swept Georgia 3-0 (30-17, 30-13, 30-20) Wednesday night in Southeastern Conference action at the O'Connell Center.
Georgia (12-6, 2-1 SEC) got on the board first in game one, but Florida (13-1, 3-0 SEC) quickly took control with a 4-0 run that included three blocks. Benavia Jenkins (Fort Pierce, Fla.), who leads the team in blocking, was part of all three of those blocks. Florida then put together a 9-1 run that put the Gators ahead 14-5. Florida's largest lead of the game came at 22-11, and the Gators scored the final four points of the stanza for the 30-17 win.
Game two was more of the same, with the Gators quickly jumping out to a 3-0 lead. After allowing a Bulldog point, Jenkins powered a 9-0 run in which she had two service aces. Georgia could not make a run of its own, and the closest the Bulldogs would get was within nine points at 15-6. Florida opened it back up and won the second game 30-13.
Georgia picked up its intensity in the third stanza, keeping the game close until midway through the game. The Gators went on a 6-1 run to open up a 21-15 lead, and eventually took game three 30-20.
Aury Cruz (Levittown, Puerto Rico) led the Gators with 12 kills, followed by Jacque Robinson (Merced, Calif.) with 11 kills. Jenkins tallied a match-high six blocks, and Lauren Moscovic (Stockton, Calif.) added nine digs in the win.
For the Bulldogs, Julia Petruschke and Alexandria Oquendo tied for the team-high in kills with six, while Jennie Metz tallied nine digs in the loss.
For the third time this season, the Gators have swept their opponent in which all three games were won by a double digit score.
Florida travels to Knoxville, Tenn., Friday to face the Lady Volunteer volleyball team at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on WRUF-AM850 and at www.gatorzone.com.
