Saturday September 28, 2002Swimming Teams Host Florida Splash Club Weekend
The University of Florida men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted the 2002 Florida Splash Club Weekend at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.
The weekend began Friday night with the 2002 Swim/Dive Awards Banquet at the University of Florida Hotel & Conference Center. The banquet honored the 1982 NCAA Women's Championship team and recognized the award winners from the 2001-02 season. Award winners included: Michael Jansen (Academic Award), Jim Kostowicz (Academic Award), Katie McCown (Academic Award), Sarah Close (Academic Award), Jonathan Strauss (Donald Gibb Award for performing above and beyond expectations), Cara Teague (Donald Gibb Award), Duncan Sherrard (Senior Leadership Award), Jose Hernando (Senior Leadership Award), Leah Martindale (Senior Leadership Award), Natalie Nickson (Senior Leadership), Sara McLarty (Skip Foster Award for most valuable swimmer), Adam Sioui (Skip Foster Award), Zach Wilcox (Bill Harlan Award for diver who has brought national recognition to the program), Chantal Gibney (Giovanni Linscheer Award for the ), Eric Donnelly (Giovanni Linscheer Award), Don Prokes (Tiger Holmes Award), Buddy Barcke (Tiger Holmes Award), Sue Halfacre (Tiger Holmes Award), and Rebecca Harper (Tracy Caulkins Award).
Saturday's festivities included the annual Alumni/Parent Meet, which was followed by a barbecue for the weekend's visitors.
Former Gator and current strength and conditioning coordinator at Florida Karin Spence, won two events in the 50-yard butterfly and the 100-yard individual medley. Recent 2002 graduate Eric Donnelly was also a two-time winner, as he won both the 50-yard fly and the 100-yard IM.
Both the men's and women's teams will open the 2002-03 season by hosting LSU on Friday, Oct. 11, at 2 p.m. at the O'Connell Center Natatorium.
