Keao Burdine registered 11 kills, and USC tallied 10 service aces as the No. 3 Women of Troy defeated the No. 6 Florida Gator volleyball team 3-0 (30-24, 30-19, 30-26) Friday at the BYU Mizuno Classic.
For the Gators, senior Nicole McCray (Longview, Texas) recorded a match-high 12 kills, and sophomore Lauren Moscovic (Stockton, Calif.) added 11 digs.
In Game One, Florida (3-1) struck first as Benavia Jenkins (Fort Pierce, Fla.) and Michelle Chatman (Woodridge, Ill.) registered block assists on USC's first attack. With the score tied 2-2, the Women of Troy (6-0) went on a 4-0 run to take a 6-2 lead. USC took a 20-13 lead before the Gators opened up a 4-0 run to move within three at 20-17. The Women of Troy then took a game-high nine-point lead at 27-18 before the Gators mounted a strong comeback with the serving of Chatman. Florida went on a 6-0 run to bring the game to 27-24, but USC held on to win 30-24. Both teams hit .154 - Florida's lowest hitting percentage in a game this season. The difference in Game One was five service aces by the Women of Troy, and the two teams combined for nine service errors in the first game.
Game two saw USC jump out to a 2-0 lead before the Gators got on the board. Jacque Robinson (Merced, Calif.) score Florida's first point on her second kill of the night. Point by point, however, the Women of Troy built a 7-3 lead before the Gators moved back to within two with a McCray kill and a Jane Collymore (Engelwood, Colo.) ace. After USC built a six-point lead at 14-8, Florida moved to within three. USC then went on a 6-0 run to take a 19-11 lead. The Women of Troy opened up their biggest lead at 11 points with the final tally of 30-19 at the end of Game Two.
In the third game, Florida took its first lead since the first point of the match at 3-0. After USC scored once, Collymore came back with a kill for Florida as the Gators took a 4-1 lead. Jenkins tallied a kill to bring the score to 5-2, matching the Gators' biggest lead of the match. The Women of Troy then went on a 4-0 run to take a 6-5 lead. USC took a five-point lead at 18-13 before the Gators slowly worked their way back to a 20-20 tie. After trading points, the Women of Troy took a 25-23 lead. Collymore brought Florida back within one before USC went on a 2-0 run to go up by three. With USC ahead 27-24, Florida's McCray notched kills on consecutive rallies to bring the Gators to within one. That was the closest the Gators would get late in the match as the Women of Troy closed out Game Three and the match with a 3-0 run.
Combined, Florida and USC totaled 20 service errors on the night. While the Gators outblocked USC 11-8, it was the Women of Troy's 10 service aces that proved to be the difference.
The Gators face Orals Roberts Saturday at 2 p.m. EST and host-school BYU Saturday at 9 p.m. EST.
