Stockbridge, Ga.

The No. 4 University of Florida men's golf won their second consecutive runner-up spot at the Atlanta Intercollegiate hosted at the Eagle's Landing Country Club (par 72 - 6,899 yards) Friday. Florida shot the low score of the day tallying 280 for 861 (-3) total.

Last year it was the Georgia Bulldogs that the Gators were unable to catch at the tournament, this year it again was an Southeastern Conference team but it was the Auburn Tigers that took the title. Auburn took the early lead and held it throughout the two-day tournament finishing at 8-under 856. Georgia finished third with an even 864.

No.2 Graeme McDowell of Alabama-Birmingham took the individual title firing and incredible 65-69-63--197 (-19). No. 1 ranked Florida sophomore Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) shot a blistering 66 in Friday's final round to take third with his 207 (-9). Scott Jamieson from Augusta State took second with 206.

Playing in his last regular season tournament as a Gator, senior Camilo Benedetti (Medellin, Colombia) capitalized on his six-stroke improvement in round two, shooting a two-under 70 finishing tied for seventh with 212. Redshirt-junior Dalton Melnyk (Jacksonville, Fla.) was the final UF golfer in the top-20, going tied for 17th carding 74-76-68--218.

In one of his most consistent performances, junior Jordan Code (Tampa, Fla.) shot 74-75-76--225 to finish tied for 34th while junior-transfer Ari Savolainen (Helsinki, Finland) continued to struggle, taking a tie for 44th with his 13-over 229.

The Gator will now prepare for the NCAA East Regional, which will bring them back to Atlanta, Ga. Monday, May 10. The East Regional is considered to be the toughest of the three considering that six of the top-10 team in the nation, four of the top-five, will compete in the tournament. The top-10 teams and two individuals not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships hosted at Ohio State on May 29-June 1, 2002.
