Wednesday April 17, 2002Softball Ends Nine Game FSU Win Streak in Split
Big hitting in the opening inning led the Florida softball team (27-29) to a 7-1 win over rival No. 20 Florida State (39-14) in the first game of a doubleheader at the Seminole Softball Complex in Tallahassee this evening. The Gator win ended a seven-game FSU win streak. Florida lost the second game 6-1.
The Gators struck early and struck hard in game one. The designated player Mandy Schuerman led off the game with a double to center field. Jennifer Mossadeghi walked. Mylin Prieto hit an RBI single to score Schuerman and move Mossadeghi to third. Katy Berger drove a double to left center to score both runners and out the Gators infront of their instate rival 3-0.
Florida lengthened its lead with four unearned runs in the top of the second. Second batter Jessie Franklin reached base on an error by the Seminole shortstop, Bryttani Lindheim. Schuerman drew the two-out walk to put runners on first and second for Jenilee Garner's triple. The two-out rally continued as Jenn Mossadeghi drew a walk and then stole second. Prieto brought both runners home to give Florida the 7-0 lead.
Both teams were stalemated in the following innings, until a solo home run by Monique Marier in the bottom of seventh prevented the Florida shutout.
Amanda Knowles (10-8) gave up four hits in the win and walked two while striking out eight. Leslie Malerich (22-10) took the loss for the Seminoles. The Gators tallied seven hits in the win.
Florida State scored first in game two. Shundra Colzie reached base on an infield lead off single. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by her twin sister Shandra Colzie and advanced to third on a wild pitch. She scored on the sacrifice fly by pitcher Jess van der Linden to give the Seminoles a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
The Seminoles added another run on a double by van der Linden in the bottom of the third inning. After the run Amanda Moore came into the game to replace Gator starter Brittani Houghton.
Florida narrowed the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fifth. Jessie Franklin led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. She was out at third on a fielder's choice play that found Andrea Zimbardi safe at first. Zimbardi advanced to second on a Moore ground out, in Moore's second at bat of the season. Zimbardi scored on Schuerman's RBI single.
Florida State extended its lead back to two runs in the bottom of the inning. Elisa Velasco scored on Shandra Colzie's hit down the right field line.
The Seminoles gained three more runs and a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth as Brandi Stuart scored on a single by Beth Wade. With runner's at first and third, Velasco hit the ball in the infield, but Kimmy Carter slid under the tag at home to score from third and Velasco was safe on the fielder's choice. Skyla Cox, who was pinch running for Wade, scored on a Jackie Hirschfeld base hit up the middle.
Van der Linden earned the win for the Seminoles. Her record improves to 14-4 on the season. Florida starter Houghton took the loss. Her record is now even at 2-2.
