The Florida softball team (25-26) swept instate foe South Florida (19-25-
1) in a doubleheader in Tampa. Mylin Prieto hit only the third grand slam
of Florida history to give the Gators an 8-0 win in five innings in the
second game. A Jenn Mossadeghi three-run homer in the first game to help
lift Florida to the 7-4 win.
The Gator defense got off to a rough start in the bottom of the first
inning. Shelly Riker scored the first run on a single by Courtney
Lewellen. Carmela Liwag and Ginny Georgantas both scored on a fielder's
choice play. Lewellen was out at second, but on an attempt to make the
double play, the ball was over thrown to first. Then in an attempt to
recover catch the runner advancing to third, the ball went into the third
base dugout to allow both runners to score, making the score 3-0 in favor
of South Florida.
The Bulls added another run in the bottom of the third as Riker scored on
a Liwag single, putting South Florida ahead 4-0.
The Gators scored their first run in the top of the fourth inning. Mylin
Prieto and Jennifer Mossadeghi led off the inning with two straight
singles. They advanced on an Andrea Zimbardi ground out. Prieto scored on
a Jessie Franklin ground out to second base.
Florida added two more runs in the top of the sixth. Mossadeghi led off
with a walk. Andrea Zimbardi followed with a single. Then, with two outs,
jenilee Garner drew a walk to load the bases. Prissie Walden followed with
a two-RBI single up the middle to put the Gators within one run at 4-3.
Florida took a 7-4 lead in the top of the seventh. With one out and Prieto
on base, Mossadeghi hit her first home run of the season out of the park
over left center field. Andrea Zimbardi followed with a base hit. Katy
Berger drove a double to the centerfield wall to put runners on second and
third. With two outs, Jenilee Garner hit a single into right field to
score both runners and give the Gators the three run lead.
Brittani Houghton earned the win for the Gators. Her record improves to 2-
1 on the season. Corin Tassio took the loss for South Florida. Her record
is now 8-7.
Mossadeghi opened the second game with a three run homer over left field
in the top of the first inning, her second of the day. The Gators added
five more runs in the top of the second. Nikki Baldwin scored on a single
by Mandy Schuerman. Then, with one out, Mylin Prieto hit a grand slam,
only the third in school history and the second home run of her career.
The four runs put the Gators up 8-0.
Amanda Knowles earned the win for Florida. Her record is now 9-7. The
losing pitcher was Niki Trowell. Her record is 8-11.
The Gators return to SEC play this weekend. They face Georgia at the
Florida Softball Stadium at noon on Saturday for a double header and a
single at noon on Sunday.
