With some of the top PGA golfers coming in to town on Monday, some of the top collegiate players got a head start on the action at the 2002 Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational hosted at the Forest Hills Golf Club (par 72 - 6,840 yards) Sunday. The No. 4 University of Florida men's golf team finished tied for fourth after carding a 56-hole total of 13-under 851.

The 18-team field showcased seven of the top-25 teams in the country with 11 of the top-25 individuals. No. 8 Tennessee won the title following a team single round record with their second round score of 272 to finish 23-under 841 total. No. 3 Wake Forrest won the runner-up honors with 18-under 846. The highest ranked team of the tournament, No. 2 Clemson finished third with 15-under 849. Florida tied with No. 23 North Carolina State at fourth.

The Vols also won the individual title in David Skinns who defeated Clemson's Greg Jones in a playoff after finishing the final round tied at 13-under 203. The low scorer for the Gators, and highest ranked individual of the field, No. 2 Camilo Villegas (Mendellin, Colombia) finished tied for third after shooting 11-under 205.

Two other UF players finished in the top 26. Senior Camilo Benedetti (Mendellin, Colombia) inched past junior Dalton Melnyk (Jacksonville, Fla.) to take the second-best Gator finish of the tournament with his 214 total for a T24 finish. Melnyk followed up his career-record second round score of 68 with a final round 73 to finish 215 and tied for 26th.

Junior Ari Savolainen (Helsinki, Finland) and senior Ben Banks (Surrey, England) also finished close together. Savolainen's 221 was good enough for T60 while Banks shot a 223 for T65.

Florida has one more regular season tournament, but first up will be the 2002 SEC Championships hosted at Sea Island, Ga. The SEC tournament will be on April 19-21 followed by the Atlanta Intercollegiate hosted at the Eagles Landing Country Club on May 9-10.
