Freshman Mandy Schuerman struck out a career-high 10 batters in Florida's 6-0 win over Maine

Florida freshman Mandy Schuerman had a career-high 10 strikeouts in a one-hit complete game shutout against Maine (11-12) as Florida (16-21) snapped a three-game losing streak by winning both its games to open the Gator Invitational Friday at Florida Softball Stadium. Schuerman (4-6) also tied a Florida season-high with her 10 strikeouts to lead Florida to a 6-0 win over Maine in Florida's second game. Florida defeated Samford (12-13) 4-0 earlier in the afternoon behind the pitching of freshman Amanda Knowles (6-6).

Jenilee Garner went 2-for-2 with a game-high three RBI for Florida against Maine, and Katy Berger went 2-for-2 with a double. Jackie Marchetta went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored to lead Florida against Samford.

"We had two good wins and we really played good defense," Florida coach Karen Johns said. "We were pleased with both freshman pitchers. Knowles got better as the game went on, and Schuerman brought her "A" game."

Florida used a four-run third inning to take a commanding lead over Maine. With the basses loaded on a hit batter, a walk and a single off Maine pitcher Candace Jaegge (6-6), Garner hit a three-run double to left-center field to put Florida up 3-0. Schuerman's ground out later in the inning brought home Garner from third base for Florida's fourth run.

Florida scored two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning to put the game out of reach. Freshman Ashley Cutcliff's RBI double to left center scored pinch runner Brittani Houghton, and Garner scored Florida's last run on a throwing error by Maine first baseman Katie Churchill.

Jenna Merchant had Maine's lone hit in the fourth inning against Florida.

In game one against Samford with Florida leading 1-0, the Gators tacked on two runs in the second inning to open up a 3-0 lead. Marchetta's grounder scored Prissie Walden, and a balk by Samford pitcher Amber Fuller (6-4) scored Andrea Zimbardi.

Marchetta knocked in Florida's fourth and final run in the top of the sixth inning by doubling in Stacey Rosen.

Knowles struck out four and allowed five hits against Samford.

Kelly Smith went 2-for-3 with a stolen base to lead Samford.

In the first game of the Gator Invitational, Wisconsin defeated Maine 2-0 on two RBI from Anna Jones. In the second game, Wisconsin defeated Samford 3-0.

Action continues Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. when Maine takes on Samford. Florida plays Wisconsin at 1:30 p.m. The tournament will then move into seeded play at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
