Wednesday March 20, 2002Alabama Wins Final Game to Sweep Softball
Alabama swept the three game series with Florida with a 7-1 win today at the Alabama Softball Complex in Tuscaloosa, Ala. today. The Gators were once again plagued by errors and an early lead haunted them as in the two games on Tuesday. The Gators have now lost nine straight to the Tide. Florida moves to 14-21 overall and 2-7 in conference play.
As in the previous two games, Florida scored first. The first three Gator batters reached base and Mandy Schuerman stole home on a double steal for Florida's first run of the game.
Alabama went ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the second inning. The Tide scored three runs off two hits and a Gator error. They added one run in the bottom of the next inning on a double by Lacy Prejean. Two Florida errors on a run down allowed two more runs to score and extended the Alabama lead to 6-1.
Florida head coach Karen Johns made several line up changes to try and help the Gator defense in the fourth inning. Only two starters, secondbaseman Mylin Prieto and left fielder Nikki Baldwin, were left in their original positions. The Gators got through the inning without an error, but Alabama scored another run on an Ashley Courtney double to take a 7-1 lead.
Amanda Knowles took the loss for Florida, moving her record to 5-6 on the season. Shelley Laird got the win for Alabama. Her record improves to 12-6.
