Tuesday March 19, 2002UF Swimmers Begin Competition at U.S. Nationals
Members of the University of Florida men's and women's swimming teams traveled to Minneapolis, Minn., this week to participate in the U.S. Spring Nationals. Competition began Tuesday with the men's and women's 800-meter freestyle.
Junior Anna Chapman (St. Simons Island, Ga.) was the lone Gator in the women's 800-meter freestyle, finishing in a time of 9:11.44 for a 35th place finish. For the men, freshman Scott Kaufmann (Sparks, Nev.) finished in 12th place with a national-cut time of 8:22.42, while freshman Jan Wolfgarten (Frankfurt, Germany) placed 14th with a time of 8:25.27.
After one event, the Florida men's team is in 10th place with eight points. The women's team did not score in the event. Competition continues Wednesday with the 100-meter freestyle, 200-meter breaststroke, 200-meter backstroke and 200-meter butterfly.
