Saturday March 9, 2002Softball Loses First Two Games of SEC Play
The Florida softball team lost their first two games of Southeastern Conference play to LSU today in Baton Rouge, La. the Gators lost the first game 4-0 and the second 2-1.
LSU took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run over center field by Christy Connor with one out. The Tigers added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jullie Weise got on base with a lead off walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice. Florida pitcher Amanda Knowles loaded the bases with a walk and an intentional walk. Megann Steege drove all the base runners home with a double deep into center field.
LSU's two-time All-American pitcher Britni Sneed recorded her tenth strikeout of the game and the 1000th of her career right before a sudden down pour halted the game with one out in the top of the fifth inning.
The game resumed just over two hours later and the Gators still had trouble getting their bats going. They threatened in the top of the sixth loading the bases with two outs, but Bree Berger struck out for the last out to end the Florida half of the inning.
Sneed recorded 17 strikeouts for the 4-0 LSU win. Amanda Knowles got the loss for Florida. Her record goes to 5-4 on the season.
Florida struck first in game two. Nikki Baldwin led off with a beuatiful bunt for a base hit. Mandy Schuerman followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance Baldwin to second. Jackie Marchetta hit a single down the right field line to put Gator runners on first and third. Mylin Prieto drove a base hit up the middle to score Baldwin for a 1-0 Florida lead.
The Tigers took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Sara Fitzgerald hit a triple to score Blair Smith. Fitzgerald scored on Trena Peel's game winning hit.
Kristin Schmidt got the win for the Tigers. Amanda Moore took the loss for Florida. Her record moves to 5-8.
The two teams will face off one more time in Baton Rouge Sunday at 11 a.m. central time.
