Sunday February 24, 2002Baseball Improves to 10-0, Defeats Siena 12-2

No. 7 Florida built a 6-0 second inning lead and Alex Hart pitched six scoreless innings as the Gators coasted to a 12-2 victory against Siena Sunday before 1,605 at McKethan Stadium. Florida is now 10-0 on the season while Siena drops to 0-5.

Florida’s 10 consecutive wins to start the season ranks tied for UF’s second-best start. The school record for best start to a baseball season at UF is 11 straight wins set in 1989.

Florida starter Alex Hart (4-0) allowed just three hits, no walks and no runs in six innings of work. He struck out four batters. Hart has now thrown 13 consecutive scoreless innings. For the season, Hart has a 4-0 record, has struck out 15 batters and allowed no earned runs (two total) and eight hits in 25.0 innings pitched. Opponents are batting just .095 (8-84) against him.

The Gators jumped out to a 6-0 lead over the first two innings. Aaron Sobieraj led off the first inning with a double followed by Mario Garza’s two-RBI home run to right field. Aaron Davidson singled, advanced to second on a balk and scored on Matt Goss’ RBI single. Goss scored from second base on Mark Kiger’s RBI single to centerfield to give Florida a 4-0 first inning lead. Sobieraj’s two-run home run in the second put UF up 6-0. UF went up 9-0 with three more runs in the fourth when Sobieraj doubled, advanced to third on a balk and scored on a wild pitch, followed by solo home runs from Garza and Ryan Shealy.

Down 12-0, Siena got on the board for the first time in the eighth inning as it scored two runs on Jim Buckley’s solo home run and a Blake Hanan RBI groundout.

Starter Justin Knoff (0-2) took the loss for Siena after pitching the first 2.0 innings. He allowed eight hits and six runs (all earned).

Juniors Aaron Sobieraj and Mario Garza led Florida at the plate. Sobieraj finished with a 4-5, four run, two RBI, two double and home run day and Garza hit two home runs and 2-2 with three RBI, two runs and two walks. Matt Goss drove in two runs on a 1-3 afternoon, Jeff Corsaletti went 1-2 with two RBI and Shealy added two hits.

Saturday’s Florida-Siena game was rained out. Wednesday, Florida hosts Siena at 6:30 p.m.

GAME NOTES

*Florida is now 5-0 all-time against Siena.

*At 10-0, Florida is off to its best start since the 1989 season when it went 11-0. The 10-0 start ranks tied for second on the all-time best season start lists with a 10-0 start in 1956.

*Florida hit five home runs today. The Gators have now hit 26 home runs in just 10 games this season and have outscored opponents 123-43.

*Alex Hart has now pitched 13 consecutive scoreless innings. He is 4-0 on the year and has yet to allow an earned run in 25 innings pitched this season.

*Mario Garza hit a career-high two home runs today.

*Jeff Corsaletti hit his first career home run, a shot over the right field fence in the seventh inning.

*Aaron Davidson extended his hit streak to 10 games with a first inning single.
